Biomes

Biomes

Explore the vibrant underwater biomes of Subnautica 2, from shallow coral reefs to mysterious deep-water environments.

Biomes

Subnautica 2 features a variety of vibrant and breathtaking underwater biomes, each with its own unique ecosystem, resources, and dangers. The official Steam description encourages players to "traverse vibrant and breathtaking biomes" as they explore the planet's depths. More biomes are planned for addition throughout Early Access.

Confirmed Biomes

Coral Gardens

Coral Gardens is a visually stunning biome that was featured prominently in the game's Early Access release announcement concept art. As the name suggests, it features vibrant coral formations and is likely one of the more visually appealing areas in the game.

Status: Confirmed -- featured in official concept art and EA release materials.

The Graveyard

The Graveyard is one of the most visually distinctive biomes shown in promotional materials, serving as the main promotional image on the Unknown Worlds games page. Its name suggests a somber, potentially dangerous environment -- possibly containing skeletal remains of large creatures or ancient structures.

Status: Confirmed -- featured in official promotional materials.

Plateaus

The Plateaus biome is referenced in developer asset filenames. It appears to be an open underwater area with elevated terrain features. Some community sources reference it as "Jelly Plateaus," suggesting the presence of jellyfish-like creatures.

Status: Confirmed -- referenced in developer asset files. "Jelly Plateaus" variant name is reported by community.

Unconfirmed Biomes

The following biome names have been reported by the community but could not be independently verified from official sources at the time of writing. These may originate from datamining, pre-release materials, or community observation:

Start Zone

The initial area where players begin their journey. Likely a shallow, relatively safe biome that serves as the tutorial area and first base-building location.

Status: Unconfirmed name. A starting area is expected based on series precedent.

Kelp Forest

A biome featuring dense kelp formations. Consistent with Subnautica series biome naming conventions, as a Kelp Forest biome existed in the original Subnautica.

Status: Unconfirmed. Name consistent with series tradition.

Overgrown Ruins

An area featuring ancient, vegetation-covered structures. Aligns with the game's theme of exploring "long-forgotten ruins."

Status: Unconfirmed. Concept aligns with official descriptions.

Sparse Plains

An open, relatively empty underwater region. May serve as a transitional biome between more densely populated areas.

Status: Unconfirmed. Reported by community.

World Tree

Possibly a biome centered around a massive organic structure. Could be one of the game's most visually impressive landmarks.

Status: Unconfirmed. Reported by community.

VepZone

An area with an unknown designation. The name does not follow typical biome naming conventions, so details are unclear.

Status: Unconfirmed. Name and nature unverified.

Void

Likely refers to a deep or abyssal zone at the edge of the playable area. Similar in concept to the Crater Edge in Subnautica 1.

Status: Unconfirmed. Concept consistent with series design patterns.

Community Notes

Early Access Notice: Biome layouts, creature populations, and resource distributions may change during development. The roadmap confirms that "biomes" are a primary area of future content expansion. Information on this page will be updated as new biomes are officially announced and documented.
