DNA Adaptation & Biomods
Subnautica 2 introduces two distinct biological modification systems that replace the traditional equipment-only progression of previous games:
- Adaptations — Permanent DNA alterations obtained via Angel Combs (4 total in EA)
- Biomods — Equipable biological enhancements unlocked via the Bioscanner (16 total in EA)
Adaptations
Adaptations permanently alter the player's DNA to survive the hostile environment of Planet Proteus. Without them, players suffer debilitating negative effects that prevent exploration.
How Adaptations Work
- Find an Angel Comb — alien structures scattered throughout the world
- Cleanse if necessary — some Angel Combs are infected with Bloom Cankers that must be destroyed using a Sonic Resonator
- Absorb the adaptation — touch the Angel Comb to permanently gain the DNA trait

1. Pressure Tolerance

2. Digestion

Found early in the game near a story-critical Blackbox. Without it, the player cannot eat any local food sources.
3. Heat Tolerance

The Graveyard biome has thermal vents that deal continuous damage until this adaptation is acquired. The Sonic Resonator tool (craftable at the Fabricator) is needed to cleanse the infected Angel Comb.
4. Axum Vision

A mid-to-late game adaptation that grants access to the ancient Axum civilization's technology. Without it, Axum tech elements are invisible or non-interactive.
Progression Order
The adaptations follow a linear exploration-gated path:
Pressure Tolerance (Prologue, automatic) → Digestion (early game, near Anita's Blackbox) → Heat Tolerance (mid game, requires Sonic Resonator) → Axum Vision (mid-late game, near Alien Base)
Biomods
Biomods are a separate equipable system unlocked using the Bioscanner tool. Unlike Adaptations (which are permanent), Biomods can be equipped and unequipped.

The Bioscanner is an upgraded Scanner that analyzes Axum technology and Protean biology. Scan creatures and flora to fulfill requirements for each Biomod.
