Creatures
Subnautica 2 is set on Proteus, an ocean moon teeming with alien life. The ecosystem ranges from tiny filter feeders to massive Leviathan-class predators. Players can scan creatures with the Scanner to unlock PDA entries with detailed biological data.
Leviathan-Class Creatures
Collector Leviathan
| Field | Details |
|---|---|
| Scientific Name | Tyrannoteuthis phobocoeus ("tyrant squid of fearful curiosity") |
| Behavior | Aggressive — hostile to players and vehicles |
| Location | Sparse Plains, Root Canyon, Karakorum Metal Farms, Observatory |
| Danger Level | LETHAL — instant kill on grab |
| Type | Cephalopod (Leviathan Class) |
The Collector Leviathan is the most dangerous confirmed creature in Early Access. It is an enormous squid-like predator with a plastic-armored mantle, four hunting tentacles tipped in sharp bioglass claws, and a beak capable of tearing through plate titanium.
Combat Behavior:
- Emits a shockwave as a warning when a player enters its detection range
- Charges at high speed, flashes its mantle, then sends a tentacle to grab the player — instant death
- Against Tadpole vehicles: throws the vehicle with extreme force, then continues attacking until it is destroyed or leaves the territory
Biology: Uses a biological phased-array sonar system for complex multi-part pulses. Has W-shaped pupils like Earth cephalopods. Two secondary hearts pump blood from gills to the main heart.
Deepwing Brooder
| Field | Details |
|---|---|
| Scientific Name | Titanotagmatapterya amalthea |
| Behavior | Passive/Unknown |
| Location | Migratory — nests at Lead Zone |
| Type | Arthropod (Leviathan Class) |
A migratory Leviathan-class arthropod that travels in groups of three and lays egg clusters at the Lead Zone. Despite its massive size, it is considered non-hostile to players.
Shiver Leviathan
| Field | Details |
|---|---|
| Behavior | Aggressive — instant kill on contact |
| Location | Void (out of bounds) |
| Type | Leviathan Class |
A dark blue bird-like Leviathan with enormous wings, a visible skeleton, and a white exoskeleton head covering. The female commands smaller males (Shiver Males) to chase the player. Guarding the World Tree beyond the map boundary.
Aggressive Fauna
Marrowbreach
| Field | Details |
|---|---|
| Type | Mango (shark) — Carnivore |
| Behavior | Aggressive |
| Location | Shallows, Anemone Hills, Graveyard (larger variant) |
| Danger Level | Medium-High |
An aggressive shark-like predator. Circles and stares at the player before attacking. In the Graveyard biome, a larger variant triggers a cinematic attack. Has a symbiotic relationship with the Houndgar, a small squid that dazzles prey to set up Marrowbreach ambushes.
Nibbler Mango
| Field | Details |
|---|---|
| Scientific Name | Mango tructa |
| Type | Mango — Omnivore |
| Behavior | Aggressive (Territorial) |
| Location | Shallows |
| Danger Level | Medium-High (groups) |
A persistent omnivore with powerful jaws that crushes rock, coral, and shell matter. Smaller individuals travel in family groups — the PDA recommends distracting them with flares and avoiding close contact. Teeth continuously replace themselves, fracturing older ones from within.
Hammerhead
| Field | Details |
|---|---|
| Scientific Name | Panoplia hammerhead |
| Type | Fish — Herbivore |
| Behavior | Territorial (rams intruders) |
| Location | Shallows, Anemone Hills, Dolerite Spires |
| Danger Level | Medium |
Despite being an herbivore that eats sponges and kelp, the Hammerhead is highly territorial and will ram players who enter its territory. Displays pectoral fins and closes its enamel head shield before charging. Observed ramming coral domes — possibly to toughen its head shield. Has three eyes: one large central eye for color vision, and two smaller motion-sensitive eyes that guide ramming attacks.
Needler Mango
| Field | Details |
|---|---|
| Scientific Name | Mango kestros |
| Type | Mango — Predator |
| Behavior | Territorial |
| Location | Observatory Island, Needler Nest |
| Danger Level | High |
Launches uranium-tipped tusks at 20 m/s — one of the most dangerous ranged attacks in the game. Guards a small island off the eastern side of Observatory Island. Approach with extreme caution.
Bullethead
| Field | Details |
|---|---|
| Scientific Name | Panopliateuthis velos |
| Type | Armored squid |
| Behavior | Swarm predator |
| Location | Root Canyon |
| Danger Level | Medium-High |
An armored squid dart that attacks in swarms using ramming and penetrating attacks. Found in the deep Root Canyon biome.
Sandspear
| Field | Details |
|---|---|
| Type | Predator |
| Behavior | Territorial |
| Location | Anemone Hills |
| Danger Level | High |
Similar to the Needler Mango — launches uranium-tipped tusks as a ranged attack.
Passive / Harvestable Fauna
Halfmoon
| Field | Details |
|---|---|
| Scientific Name | Moliform luna |
| Type | Fish — Herbivore (filter feeder) |
| Behavior | Passive |
| Location | Shallows, multiple biomes |
| Danger Level | None |
A large forage fish and valuable food source. Can be caught with bare hands — eating raw is possible but cooking in the Fabricator is recommended. Has a unique nervous system defect (lacks reafference cancellation) causing disoriented, sideways swimming. Variants include Harvestmoon and Waxmoon.
Water Slug
| Field | Details |
|---|---|
| Type | Mollusc |
| Behavior | Passive |
| Location | Shallows, Observatory Island |
| Danger Level | None |
Functionally similar to the Bladderfish from Subnautica 1 — can be fabricated into water, making it an essential early-game survival resource. One of the earliest creatures revealed for Subnautica 2, discovered through developer Time Capsules in the original game.
Waterslug Variants
- Flash Slug — a luminescent relative with chimeric traits, found at Observatory Island
Other Notable Creatures
| Creature | Location | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Houndgar | Graveyard | Small squid that dazzles prey for Marrowbreach ambushes |
| Tongue Thief | Root Canyon, Karakorum Metal Farms | Parasitic crab that dwells in creature mouths, causing insatiable hunger |
| Epicurean | Root Canyon, Karakorum Metal Farms | Voracious omnivore; more dangerous under parasite influence |
| BFJ (Behemoth Finger-Legged Jelly) | Plateaus | Massive jelly creature with no Earthly analog |
